Fusion Mineral Paint is an all-in-one, self-priming paint that includes a built-in topcoat. To achieve a flawless finish, clean the surface, sand away any glossy sheens, and apply two thin coats using a high-quality synthetic brush, waiting at least 2 to 4 hours between coats.
Follow these four simple steps to ensure a professional-looking finish
1. Prep the Surface
- Clean: Wash the piece thoroughly using a TSP alternative or mild degreaser to remove grease, grime, and fingerprints.
- Scuff Sand: Lightly sand (around 220-grit) any glossy or shiny surfaces to give the paint something to grip. (You can skip sanding if the piece already has a matte finish).
- Wipe & Assess: Remove all sanding dust with a damp, lint-free cloth. If your piece has wood knots or heavy tannins, apply a stain-blocking primer first. For slick surfaces like glass or laminate, apply Fusion UltraGrip for better adhesion.
2. Apply the Paint
- Stir, Don't Shake: Stir the paint thoroughly from the bottom up to distribute the minerals. Shaking can create stubborn air bubbles.
- Work in Thin Layers: Dip your brush halfway into the paint and offload the excess. Apply the paint in thin, even strokes.
- Avoid Overworking: Fusion dries quickly. Don't go back over areas that have already started to dry, as this can drag the paint and leave texture.
3. Dry Times and Re-Coating
- Wait: Let the first coat dry for 1 to 2 hours (4 to 12 hours is ideal) before applying the next coat.
- Light Sanding: If the paint feels a little rough between coats (especially on raw wood), gently buff it with a fine-grit sanding pad.
- Coverage: Most mid to dark colors take 1 to 2 coats, while lighter colors or whites may require 2 to 3 thin coats.
4. Optional Top Coat
- When to use one: Fusion has a durable, built-in topcoat. However, if you are painting a high-traffic area (like a dining table or kitchen cabinets), you may want to add an extra layer of protection using Fusion Tough Coat.
- How to apply: Stir well without bubbling, and apply using a damp, dense sponge. Drag the sponge across the surface in one continuous motion to avoid streaking, particularly on dark colors.
